Things seem to be going pretty well these days for Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. They are about to host the Golden Globes for the second year in a row, they’re both producing multiple shows for multiple networks, and they’re serving as guest editors of the new issue of Entertainment Weekly. But what people really want to know is: When will these Saturday Night Live/Baby Mama co-stars find a way to join forces for another TV show or movie?
During our Q&A with the pair for this special issue, the 30 Rock creator/actress and Parks and Recreation star declared their desire to star together in a drama. And we mean together. “We want to play Siamese twin judges on a law procedural,” says Fey. “Our condition does not get in the way of our judgment,” adds Poehler. “And that’s what the show’s about: Even though we’re bound together, we’re not bound to each other’s ideals.” Fey agrees: “One of us is very conservative and the other is a recovering alcoholic, so it makes for great drama.”
But it was a high-profile project on the big screen that truly lit up their faces, as Fey and Poehler revealed that they have scored roles in the new Star Wars film as… Darth Vader’s mothers.
POEHLER: “He has two horrible mothers. We know a lot of father stuff with Star Wars, and not a lot of mother stuff. We play these really naggy mothers of Darth Vader.”
FEY: [In an elderly New Yorker accent] “Darth, eat! Why don’t you eat?” That kind of stuff.
POEHLER: “You’re never gonna find a girl when you go out looking like that!”
FEY: Making him practice his Jedi stuff for hours.
POEHLER: Hitting on all his Jedi friends inappropriately. I feel like the theme of the next Star Wars is going to be: How does a working mother juggle it all? I’m looking forward to that. What I like about all these giant superhero movies is that they speak to the issues that I’m dealing with right now — working mother and time management and how to be an interesting, sexual, curious woman in your 40s. That’s the kind of stuff that I like to see on the screen, and that’s what I see with a lot of the films out today.
And what does J.J. Abrams, who will direct the next Star Wars installment, have to say about all of this? Reached via email for comment, he told EW: “The exciting thing about having Amy and Tina play the Vader Moms, as we’re calling them, is that they bring to the film that pitch-perfect Star Wars energy fans are clamoring for.”
He would not, however, confirm the rumor that R2-D2 and C-3PO will be played by Adam Scott and Jon Hamm.
