Amy Poehler, Leslye Headland and Natasha Lyonne talk ‘Russian Doll’ at Deadline’s Contenders Emmys

Last month, Amy attended Deadline’s Contenders Emmys event and they are just now releasing some videos from the panels. In this video, Amy Poehler, Leslye Headland, and Natasha Lyonne discuss how ‘Russian Doll’ changes the binge-watching game. Unfortunately, the video can’t be embedded, so head over to Deadline’s website to watch it!

The binge-watching model of watching TV series on streaming platforms has become commonplace, but how do we, as a society, evolve that? Russian Doll co-creators, executive producers and writers Leslye Headland, Amy Poehler and Natasha Lyonne (who also stars) are here to take on that challenge with their existential deja-vu Netflix series.

During Deadline’s The Contenders Emmys awards-season event, Poehler points out that the comedy goes beyond the funny and has different layers to it. She said the creators wanted to “exploit this feeling of having to make choices over and over again and the existential dread that comes with that.”

That said, the series does serve up some existential realness that requires multiple binges — something Headland wanted. They not only created a show worth bingeing in one sitting, but created a show that needed to be watched over and over again. “That’s the next place for binge-watching — it’s like an album you listen to [over and over again],” she said.

Lyonne told the crowd of TV Academy and guild voters during the panel discussion that they spoke about the characters through a cinematic scope, and throughout the eight episodes there is a “crescendo and a finish” that sticks the landing — something that also lends well to the binge model.

Russian Doll follows a young woman named Nadia (Lyonne) on her journey as the guest of honor at a seemingly inescapable party one night in New York City. One night she falls down the stairs and dies and then she is transported to a certain point in the same evening when she dies again…and then it happens again…and again, and Nadia must figure out why she’s on this bizarre yet meaningful journey.
